"I Used To Be Ashamed To Smile, My Smile Makeover Gave Me My Confidence Back."
My name is Roberta. I came to Smile Design Dental to get a smile makeover.
But the main reason I had this makeover was because of the way I looked, the way my teeth looked. I was ashamed to smile or open my mouth because it just looked so ugly.
Dr. Vera:
We all have the opportunity to see what a beautiful, caring, loving mother and grandmother Roberta is. To personally know how ashamed and unhappy she was with her smile and me having the ability to fix that for her, it’s one of the most rewarding things in my career. Giving somebody that confidence to smile, to externally see themselves as he really is internally, is one of the best aspects of my profession.
Roberta:
Before I had my smile makeover, I had such yellow teeth, and the older I got, the more yellow they seem to become. I also had a gap. But the main reason I had this makeover was because of the way I looked, the way my teeth looked. I was ashamed to smile or open my mouth because it just looked so ugly.
Dr. Vera:
Roberta is one of our patients. I would say that she’s the typical patient that has spent most of their life afraid of smiling, afraid of participating in daily lifestyle activities because they’re ashamed of their teeth. When she walked in the door, I can notice that she slaps a little bit, didn’t want to smile, and kind of covered her mouth with her hands as she was discussing the dislikes of her current teeth.
Roberta:
I just felt so uncomfortable about my teeth showing. I felt embarrassed [inaudible] people just wonder, what does she do? Why doesn’t she clean her teeth? And I tried so hard just to cover my mouth. Don’t let anybody see or [inaudible] had a smile, I would like that’s kind of a smile. I was embarrassed of the way I looked.
Dr. Vera:
After taking some photographs, and discussing what was wrong with the dentition, then we sat down together and plan what we wanted and added the next dentition. We were able to create a smile that both she was proud of, but also, she could function with.
Roberta:
I met with Dr. Vera. We talked about what possibilities were available for me, and I saw a lot of the work that she had done with other patients, and I was just so thrilled that I could look like that. She told me what she would be doing. Really, I just sat there in the chair, and she did all of her magic.
Dr. Vera:
And so, how we did that basically was taking digital photographs, we put it into our software, we created the 3d mock-up, and then we had the lab basically customize their porcelain to better suit her skin tone, her age, and her functioning habits.
Roberta:
I had 18 teeth replaced. To get, that was the best option for me to have each of those done, which is a lot of teeth made a huge, huge change, huge improvement. Such a transition from what it looked like before, and also having the gap. The first time I saw my oldest son and I said “Do you notice anything? Did you get your hair done? Did you change your hair color?” And I just turned my face to him and smiled. I said, no. “Your teeth. They look beautiful.” People know there’s something different. But it seems like it looks so natural that they just don’t think it’s my teeth. It’s like what did you do? What did you do? And then, I give a big smile and it’s like your teeth. They’re beautiful.
Dr. Vera:
We created porcelain veneers using a layer of E-max process, where the lab technicians were able to create the most lifelike results using very thin porcelain laminate over about 18 teeth in her mouth. The final results for Roberta’s smile are basically an improvement in her confidence level. She smiles. It’s taken about 10,15 years off her face. She just glows and it’s so amazing to see those results visually in our office.
Roberta:
When I saw the final product, I was handed a mirror, looked at, and I just stopped. I teared up. It was more than I ever expected. Dr. Vera is a miracle worker, and it was just beautiful. I couldn’t help but cry. I thought of my husband and wondered what he would think. I know he’d be happy for me.
